In the first book, Dan Fields, a Corporal in Stonewall Jackson's Rebel Army, is marching near Bath Virginia. At the height of a blizzard, he touches the cross at his neck and remembers his Granny's warning: "You won't die in this war, but you may wish you had." Seeking refuge, he stumbles into a cave, and suddenly finds himself in 2010. The sequl picks up with Dan and his family eightteen years later.

Now the humming had reached a crescendo, drawing him nearer and nearer to an altar-like column of rock in the center of the chamber. He saw that this was the source of the light. The humming beat in his head and he felt himself moving toward the upright rock. Grabbing at a column covered with drawings of giant birds and plumed serpents, Dan braced his feet and yelled in defiance. He heard himself screaming as he was pulled downward into a vortex behind the altar.
