The Flash, Season 2

by multiple writers and directors

After Barry aborts his mission to the past in Season 1 in order to prevent his own present from being erased, he finds that his travel has caused even bigger problems! Yep, a rift has been a-opened to a parallel world with an alternate Flash and an evil speedster and—it would seem—more time travelin’ and another attempt to save his mom and dad!
— Michael Main
No, that’s not how it works. In our timeline, Barry’s mother’s already dead, and her death is a fixed point. And nothing can change that.
DEBUT
The Flash, season 2 (The CW, USA, 6 October 2015) to 24 May 2016).

TAGS(SPOILERS!)
Time Periods Timeline Models Themes
  • Causal Loops: The possible causal loop from Season 1—when Cisco and the others saw the Flash’s new costume—became reality when the Flash adopted that very costume.
  • Clock Roaches: the Time Wraiths
  • Guardians of Time: One of the Speed Force’s tasks is to protect the timeline.
  • Meeting or Viewing Ancestors or Descendants: In the final episode, Barry again meets his dying mother.
  • Messing with Someone’s Younger Self: In addition to Thawne trying to kill child Barry (which we already knew about), Thawne also shows up anew in ”The Reverse-Flash Returns” (s02e11), hoping to kill young Flash.
  • Never Change the Past!: All these changes are killing Cisco! See “The Reverse-Flash Returns” (s02e11).
  • Reincarnation: Kendra and her pals seem to be reincarnated; they might also have long lives, but we’re not tagging that. See “Legends of Today” (s02e08).
  • Retrocide: There’s some murky connection between time remnants and killing your younger self.
  • Save Your Family!: Barry still hopes beyond hope to save Nora Allen.
  • Self-Defeating Acts: Barry saving his mom is a self-defeating act, although the timeline doesn’t seem to mind.
  • Selves-Visitation: When Flash goes back one year in “Flash Back” (s02e17), he meets and fights himself. And in the final episode, Barry again meets both a younger Barry and an older Barry.
  • Time Montages: When Barry travels through time in “Flash Back“ (s02e17) he sees a montage of different times. Maybe other montages are in this season, too.
  • Unusual Aging: There’s a brief moment in ”Flash Back” (s02217) when a Time Wraith ages Barry rapidly. Also, a meta-human in “Back to Normal” (s02e19) ages himself to death.
  • Viewing the Past: Cisco sees the past at least once in “Flash of Two Worlds” (s02e02).

  2. From the particle accellerator in Central City, early spring, 2016 ⋙ to Central City, the previous year. Round trip. Note: Flash goes back before Eobard-as-Wells died in order to pick his brain on how to get faster in “Flash Back” (s02e17).
  3. From Central City, mid-2016 ⋙ to Barry’s childhood home in Central City, 15 years earlier. Round trip. Note: Once again, in a season finale—during the closing minute of “The Race of His Life” (s02e23)—we see Barry trying to save his mother from the Reverse Flash.
